- You should reinstall cap / dipstick. You have to wait a few seconds and remove. Check the oil quantity and make sure it is within the markings on the dipstick. The cap should be secure before you can start the engine.

Hydro Gear transaxle maintenance
You should take care of the hydro gear transaxle regularly. Consider changing the oil often to avoid mistake.
Transaxle oil is a heat transfer. If it breaks down, it would not work as a good lubricant for your transaxle.
A new Gravely zero turn lawn mower should have its transaxle oil changed after the first 75 hours of operation.
After the first change, you can change every 400 hours.
How do you change Hydro Gear transaxle oil?
You can easily change the transaxle oil in the following steps:
- First, you should park the unit on a flat, level surface. You have to wait for hot parts to cool and remove the ignition key.
- You should position a drain pan under the transaxle being serviced.
- Take out the filter guard and filter from the transaxle. You can dispose of the filter and retain the guard.
- Remove the transaxle vent port plug. You should let the oil drain.
- You should wipe the filter mounting surface clean and lubricate the gasket on the filter with clean hydraulic oil.
- The next thing to do is to reinstall the filter and filter guard.
- You should ensure that you follow the manufacturer’s recommended oil type and volume to the transaxle oil expansion tank until the oil reaches the top of the vent port.
- Reinstall hydraulic oil vent port plug.
- The next thing to do is to add oil to transaxle oil expansion tanks until the fluid level reaches the cold fill mark.
- You have to purge hydraulic oil system.
Purging Hydro Gear transaxles
When changing the transaxle oil, understand that air pockets can be caught in the transaxles.
This requires purging air from the transaxles instantly after you complete service. When the purging is complete, you should recheck the transaxle oil expansion tanks.
You need to add oil to reach its cold line in the tanks.

- Zero Turn units with “Hydro-Gear” pumps and wheel motors– We recommend the use of 20W-50 or *15W50 synthetic motor oil.
- Zero Turn units with “Hydro-Gear” individual transaxles – We recommend the use of 20W50 or *15W50 synthetic motor oil.
- ATV-Treker – Rear transmission uses SAE 80W-90 w/ GL-5 rating, front differential uses *Mobil 424, and right angle gear box SAE 80W-90 w/ GL-5 rating.
- 2-Wheel and 4-Wheel tractors – We recommend the use of *SAE 30 motor oil for summer and *10W-30 for winter use.
- 400 Series tractor – 4-speed Gear drive SAE 90 in the gear box.
- Model “L” & 7.6 – We recommend the use of a SAE10 in winter and *SAE 30 in summer (*10W-30 can be used as a alternate).
- Pro-Walk Gear drive walk-behind – use a *Bentonite grease in the gear box.
- Pro-150 & 200’s – Kindly check “Pro-Walk Gear” above.
- Pro-250 – We recommend the use ofSAE 30 motor oil.
- Pro-300 – We recommend the use of20W-50 or *15W50 synthetic motor oil.
