If you have a lawn that requires mowing often, you might have gotten a lawn mower that works for you. However, not all mowers can fit your property.
For instance, I have used SCAG and Ferris lawn mowers, and have my recommendation about the two models.
Which is better SCAG or Ferris? I will be talking more about these two lawn models in this article. I believe you will have made up your mind on the mower to use at the end of the article.
Scag Overview
Although Scag came late in the market, it has become a popular brand with its features and specifications. I will go through why the brand is pushing its mowers to many properties worldwide.
Scag’s tagline is “There is no competition,” and it says it all. The first time the brand made its first zero-turn mower was around two decades ago. The model has built a reputation for people who want durable and classic mowers.
You decide to use the propane, diesel, or gas mower from this brand. Each mower you pick comes with great features and a smooth learning curve that can suit a commercial or residential lawn.
The brand has four models of zero-turn mowers that include the Turf Tiger II, Cheetah, Tiger Cat II, Patriot, and Freedom Z. The brand uses Kawasaki, Kohler, Kubota Diesel, and a Briggs Vanguard engine.
Here are some of the features you can find in any Scag mower.
Engine
Depending on the capacity you desire, the brand has the Kohler 7000 Series Pro engine, 22hp, and 24hp. Tiger Cat II has a wider variety; Kawasaki FS 22-23hp and Kohler Command 23-26hp, while Patriot has Kawasaki 22 and 23hp.
The Cheetah has Kawasaki FX 22-31hp and Kohler Command Pro 23-35hp.
Deck Sizes
Scag’s deck can measure 52″, 61″, and 72″ and has a 7-gauge, which is welded for stability. The adjustable deck uses a foot pedal with a self-locking that provides safety to the user.
Seat
Any model you pick offers an air-suspended seat that ensures your comfort. The adjustable seat can fit your seat because of its spacious nature of the seat.
Fuel Capacity
For instance, Patriot and Freedom Z need at least 6.5 gallons of fuel to fill the mounted tank fuel above the wheel. However, the Tiger Cat II has dual tanks mounted above the wheel, but consumes 9 gallons, while the dual tanks of Cheetah can consume 10 to 15 gallons of fuel.
Controls and Warranty
If you want a mower with a fast response, you should consider the Scag mowers that allow great steel control. The ergonomically designed steers offer comfort, but the brand has an unclear warranty for its engine or any other parts.
Scag Pros & Cons

Ferris Overview
I can tell you that the Ferris brand has an interesting story when it comes to its production. The brand was established in 1909 as a milking company called the Uebler Machine Company which produces milking machines for small dairy farmers.
However, it suffered loss by the mid 1980s and changed its line of business to producing rugged lawn mowers.
It produced its hydrostatically droved mower in 1986 and a decade later, it produced its first independent suspension on a riding lawn mower. I have another thing to say about Ferris mowers, they can work as commercial grade mowers.
With its high-quality components, you can drive the mowers for years. The Simplicity Manufacturing Company owns the Ferris mowers, which is a subsidiary of Briggs and Stratton. Snapper and Giant-Vac. Giant-Vac is owned by Briggs and Stratton.
Features
Each Ferris mower you buy from the company offers the ‘3 in 1’ option, which ensures that you can side discharge, rear bag, or mulch with it. Its adjustable deck cutting height makes use of a foot control or a lever on some of its expensive models.
Construction
Ferris model makes use of pivoting fabricated steel on its front axles. In addition, this is standard on most ZTR mowers. Its drive axles offer tapered bearings that are similar to wheel bearings on a car. In addition, Ferris is one of the brands that have such features on their models.
The frames are fully welded steel. Therefore, it has no bolts and nuts to come loose, which can compromise the frame strength.
Models
Ferris ZTR mowers can be found in the following models – the 500Z, 1500Z, 1500ZX, 2000Z, 3100Z, 3100ZP, and the 4500Z. Each of the Ferris models has the designation ‘IS’, which indicates ‘Independent Suspension”.
Thus, whichever model you pick from the model, you would love it. Furthermore, the brand loads its mowers with heavy-duty wheels, premium paint, industrial-strength wiring, etc.
Model 500Z is fitted with either a 24 or 26 HP Briggs or Stratton twin-cylinder engine. Its cutting width is 44”, 52”, or 61”. Also, it makes use of fabricated steel with reinforced side skirts on the deck.
PTO is activated with a switch and electric. Wheel motors and Hydro-Gear pups can make the model move with cooling fans. The function of the fabricated fan keeps the transmission cool and removes debris from its transmission.
My Honest Review
Most of my friends believed I would stay true to the Ferris brand. However, I found it difficult to navigate. In addition, I might want to stick to using Ferris IS 2100 because it is much more maneuverable with the 61″ deck.
Long story short, my choice is the Ferris mowers. However, you can make your choice based on other factors.
